Background: | Myristate, a rare 14-carbon saturated fatty acid, is cotranslationally attached by an amide linkage to the N-terminal glycine residue of cellular and viral proteins with diverse functions. N-myristoyltransferase catalyzes the transfer of myristate from CoA to proteins. N-myristoylation appears to be irreversible and is required for full expression of the biologic activities of several N-myristoylated proteins, including the α subunit of the signal-transducing guanine nucleotide-binding protein (G protein). |
Synonyms: | N-myristoyltransferase 1 |
UniProt Protein Function: | NMT1: Adds a myristoyl group to the N-terminal glycine residue of certain cellular and viral proteins. Belongs to the NMT family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:EC 2.3.1.97; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis; Transferase Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 17q21.31 Cellular Component: cytoplasm; cytosol; extrinsic component of membrane; mitochondrion; plasma membrane Molecular Function:glycylpeptide N-tetradecanoyltransferase activity; myristoyltransferase activity Biological Process: in utero embryonic development; ketone metabolic process; N-terminal peptidyl-glycine N-myristoylation; N-terminal protein myristoylation; positive regulation of protein insertion into mitochondrial membrane involved in apoptotic signaling pathway; regulation of rhodopsin mediated signaling |
